THEORY BY EMAIL

HOW THE COURSE OPERATES

General Overview

THEORY BY EMAIL is the online international version of the correspondence course THEORY BY POST, which has been running in the United Kingdom since May, 2000.

After enrolment for THEORY BY EMAIL each student receives (by email) one module of the course at a time, together with a set of related course exercises. The exercises are then worked and emailed back to DP Music Services, where they are marked and finally returned to the student along with the next module of the course. If a student has the misfortune to fail a module a set of Supplementary Exercises is sent to be worked, with some further in-depth tuition on the weaker topic(s) if necessary. The student is eligible to proceed to the next module once the Supplementary Exercises have been passed. All work is graded on an A to E scale, where A represents excellent work and E represents poor work. A, B and C are pass grades in all modules.

After completing each grade of THEORY BY EMAIL students are required to work a set of three Specimen Papers in the format of the examinations set by one of the boards whose syllabuses are followed by the course. The purpose of this is to 'draw together' all the various topics covered throughout each grade, and to provide a 'taster' of a typical external examination.

At the end of each grade students may (if they wish) enter for an external theory examination to the same level as the grade they have just worked through. Details of local examination centres are available by clicking here. Please note that it may not be possible to take examinations run by both examination boards whose syllabuses are covered by this course in the country where you reside. Alternatively if there are provisions for examinations to be taken students may have to travel quite a considerable distance to their nearest examination centre.

If you are interested in taking an exam in your locality, please refer to Entering External Examinations.

It is essential that each student pays for each module in advance; the course materials will not be sent until payment has been received. Payment must of course be by a valid credit or debit card; the following cards may be used: Mastercard, Visa, Delta, Switch, Solo and JCB.
